Product Support - Painting
Here are the instructions to paint your shutters. Make sure shutters are paintable prior to painting them. If the shutter is already colored through, most likely the product can not be painted. Our paintable shutters are a cloudy white and must be painted.
1. Do not expose shutters to direct sunlight before, during or immediately after painting.
Shutters should be between 60 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit for best results.
2. Clean shutter panels using either a mixture of ammonia and water, 1 cup per gallon, or soap and water, follow directions on container. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry 1 hour.
3. Prime shutter with a good primer. We recommend Sherwin Williams Adhesion Primer, B51 W 8050 WHITE, 6501-32590. Follow manufacturer's instructions.
4. For best results use a high quality oil base or latex paint for a top coat. DO NOT USE ANY TYPES OF VINYL BASED PAINTS.
5. Apply two coats of the finish paint following the manufacturer's recommendations on the amount of time between coats. The paint can be applied with a brush or spray following the paint manufacturer's recommendations.
6. Allow the shutter to dry four days prior to installation, especially if the shutter will be exposed to direct sun and high temperatures. This will allow the paint to fully cure.
